David’s May Signature Cocktail
Happy Cinco de Mayo! It’s time to celebrate, and what would a celebration be without a cocktail? In honor of this Mexican holiday, May’s signature cocktail is a margarita. But this isn’t just your average margarita with tequila and lime. We’re going to add blueberry and citrus flavors to give this traditional drink a little bit of a twist!
The origin of the margarita is unclear as there are many different stories about how it was first made. However, the most common story starts with a man named Carlos Herrera who owned a restaurant in Rancho la Gloria, Mexico. One day, a woman came into the restaurant and wanted a cocktail, but was allergic to every spirit except tequila. She didn’t like drinking tequila straight, so Herrera combined the ingredients of a typical tequila shot (tequila, salt and lime) into a drink that we all now know as the margarita!
With that little history lesson in mind, it’s time to make your own Blueberry Margarita!
Ingredients (makes 2):
• ¼ cup of fresh blueberries
• 1 ounce of fresh lime juice
• 4 ounces of tequila (preferably silver!)
• 1.5 ounces of simple syrup
• Orange bitters
• Kosher or sea salt
Directions
• Start by rimming your glass with a lime wedge. Then swirl the rim of the glass in a pile of kosher or sea salt and add ice.
• In a shaker, muddle the blueberries and lime juice together until the blueberries are completely mashed.
• Add the tequila, simple syrup and a few dashes of orange bitters into the shaker. (You can either buy simple syrup from the store or make your own! Check out our other monthly cocktail recipes to find instructions on how to make your own simple syrup.)
• Add a handful of ice to the shaker and shake for at least 15 seconds.
• Strain the drink into your salted glasses and you have yourself a refreshing Blueberry Margarita.
Be sure to serve this drink at your Cinco de Mayo party and it will be the star of the show!
